Art and Wellbeing
ART and wellbeing was a pilot programme of visual arts workshops exploring identity and sense of self, using a range of media and learning new skills including:
- Drawing techniques and face proportions
- Mono and screenprinting techniques
- Working in 3D with Modroc and clay
The pilot programme was designed and delivered by Pip Lewis and Guy Norman from spacetocreate, enabling participants to learn new skills, develop confidence and self esteem and express themselves creatively. The three groups who took part were: Pembrokeshire MIND, Pembrokeshire People Firstand Pembrokeshire Sign and Share Club.
The project was documented on film, providing an opportunity for participants to reflect on and evaluate their experience and the benefits of taking part. The film, made by Sharron Harris of Curious Ostrich, provides a resource that can be used to shape the design of a potential future arts and wellbeing service.
The film explores three questions:
- What are the intrinsic benefits of creativity?
- How can the arts contribute to wellbeing?
- What are the key things to think about in developing a future arts and wellbeing service?
An exhibition of work and screening took place in Haverfordwest on 8 December 2017 with an address by Eluned Morgan AM, Chair of the cross-party Arts and Health group.Pip Lewis welcoming everyone to the launch event, introduced the pilot project, which was followed by the first public screening of the Art of Wellbeing film.
Participants from Pemrokeshire People First and the Sign and Share club shared their personal experiences of the benefits of taking part in the pilot project.
Eluned Morgan AM concluded the event, giving a wider perspective on the work of the Cross-party Art and Health group in Wales, and the latest research into the benefits of the arts for health and wellbeing evidenced in the recent inquiry report by the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group. http://www.artshealthandwellbeing.org.uk/appg-inquiry/
