20 Women

Portrait of a community: An Exhibition of 20 Photographs and writing by Jane Hemmings.
Making art is an attempt to communicate observations to others – my personal response to the world around me.
I have tried to capture the variety and beauty of womens’ hands, at every age, and every stage, of life. The words and phrases they have chosen, express their own reflections in a moment of time. The poems are informed by what I have learned by talking with these wise, talented, and open-hearted members of my community.
Jane Hemmings was born in 1958 and studied English Literature and Language at Manchester University in the 1970s. She has worked in weaving for part of her life, starting as a textile therapist in 1979 and was a hand weaver with Alan Hemmings at Studio in the Church until 1996.
Currently she works in the voluntary sector, and is planning to exhibit these photographs in her local community hall and in galleries in West Wales. Her main art discipline is drawing and printmaking.
