DESCRIPTION:The first in a seasonal series of experimental days using psychogeography as a framework for creative practice with writer Dr Alison Clare Scott and visual artist Pip Lewis. \nPsychogeography is both a way of moving through an environment; and the effect of engaging with the geographical location differently. What was initially an urban practice will be diversified into the wild\, rural landscape of West Wales. We will explore the possibilities of navigating topography\, identifying the palimpsest of the locale and expressing our responses through creative writing and visual arts. \nAn experimental approach will be encouraged\, introducing ideas around memory\, history\, voices and narratives that emerge in response to place and the way they make us feel or behave. \nThe focus of this first session is related to the Celtic calendar – Samhain\, letting go of the old (into the cauldron) to prepare new beginnings. Celtic spirituality named sacred places as thin places where the walls between heaven and earth seem especially permeable\, and the worlds distinctly close to each other. They also believed that time was not linear but spiral. This place was not just beyond time but beyond space and actually re-forming space. This is the space where we start: we will walk the land\, begin our engagement with this patch of earth\, and form our individual relationship\, letting our intuition draw us to the stories we want to express. \nThe workshop will be of interest to those who are interested in developing their creative practice and exploring the playful interplay between writing and visual arts in relation to psychogeography and the sense of place. \nCost £110 per person plus booking fee\, inclusive of a fresh organically grown lunch\, coffees\, teas\, cake and all art materials needed for the day. \nTickets via eventbrite here

This will include examples of his working methods and a range of selected current artists/makers. All are welcome but it would interest people who want to explore their own creative potential\, artists\, makers\, or simply people who are interested in art\, design\, and craft. SUMMARY:Loose Threads
DESCRIPTION:A Collaborative Installation focusing attention on Homelessness\n \nRuth Sargeant Artist and Maker\nGina Hughes Photographer and Maker\nLily Legion Poet and Maker. \nRuth met Lily in 2017 when she had been a hidden victim of this profoundly debilitating situation for almost two years\, and following the breakup of a long-term relationship. Since July 2018 Lily has had a roof over her head\, but in temporary accommodation in which she continues to feel insecure\, but also dependant\, even belittled and controlled. \nGina has been supporting a close female relative who is on the brink of homelessness following the loss of her husband and a prolonged episode of depression. Services have designated her as “Intentionally Homeless”. \nPembrokeshire may not have the high numbers of rough sleepers obvious in inner city areas but hidden homelessness is significant and like other indictments of our social fabric is very much close to home. Whilst acknowledging that there are some progressive initiatives to address this problem we remain appalled\, not only at the homelessness itself but at the underlying Victorian attitude of shaming and blaming victims that continues to rear it’s ugly head. \nLoose Threads \nTapping in to the age old European common motif of the thread of life and the use of cotton reels as key rings\, Loose Threads draws the viewer in with a colourful display of cotton reels with keys attached. Interspersed are empty reels with a short but succinct poem written by Lily on Homelessness. This cheerful display is offset by vintage cotton reels cast in parian* and attached to thread which in turn forms an image of the poem. These black threads hang loose with no key attached. \n* A type of porcelain first produced by Minton in 1845 to mimic marble.

DESCRIPTION:Portrait of a community: An Exhibition of 20 Photographs and writing by Jane Hemmings. \nMaking art is an attempt to communicate observations to others – my personal response to the world around me.\nI have tried to capture the variety and beauty of womens’ hands\, at every age\, and every stage\, of life. The words and phrases they have chosen\, express their own reflections in a moment of time. \nThe poems are informed by what I have learned by talking with these wise\, talented\, and open-hearted members of my community. \nJane Hemmings was born in 1958 and studied English Literature and Language at Manchester University in the 1970s. She has worked in weaving for part of her life\, starting as a textile therapist in 1979 and was a hand weaver with Alan Hemmings at Studio in the Church until 1996. \nCurrently she works in the voluntary sector\, and is planning to exhibit these photographs in her local community hall and in galleries in West Wales. Her main art discipline is drawing and printmaking.

DESCRIPTION:David Shepherd : Exhibition of recent work. \nThe images on show are raw on paper\, and relate to David’s sculpture/installation archival process. \nThe inspiration to show a selection of my recent collages interrelated with my photographs and degraded photocopied images comes directly from several visits to spacetocreate. \nspacetocreate’s drop in courses working with both children and adults\, often using collage/construction techniques\, demonstrates a fluidity and simple dynamic that fits in with these aspects of my research. \nI feel very comfortable profiling what is very often a private activity at spacetocreate ! \nDavid Shepherd formerly Head of Media Art and Performance within the BA (Hons) Fine Art Course at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff – now Cardiff Metropolitan University. \nDavid Shepherd was born in Wigan\, Lancashire.
